25 Rohingyas, Including Women and Children, Arrested in Tripura
Police Detain Group for Illegal Entry Amidst Rising Infiltration
Cases
Tripura Police have arrested 25 Rohingyas, including six women and seven
children, from two different locations in North Tripura district for entering
the state without valid documents. The arrests took place in the Dharmanagar
and Churaibari areas on Thursday night while the group was attempting to travel
to Hyderabad in search of employment opportunities. According to a senior
police officer, the group likely intruded through Sonamura in Sepahijala
district and Kailashahar in Unakoti district, originating from Bangladesh’s
Cox’s Bazar.
Their plan was to travel to Guwahati by bus and then proceed to Hyderabad by
train. Tripura, which shares an 856 km long international border with
Bangladesh, has several unfenced patches, making it a vulnerable point for
illegal crossings.
From January last year until April 15 this year, a total of 1,018 people,
including 498 Bangladeshi nationals, were detained in Tripura while trying to
cross the Indo-Bangla border, as reported by the Border Security Force (BSF).
This marks a significant increase in detentions compared to previous years. In
2022, the BSF detained 369 individuals, including 150 Bangladeshi nationals,
160 Indians, and 59 Rohingyas. In 2021, 208 intruders were detained, comprising
115 Indians and 93 Bangladeshis.
