Assam and Arunachal Pradesh Reel Under Severe Floods, Over 600,000 Affected
Heavy Rainfall and Rising River Levels Pose
Dire Threat as State Administrations Brace for Worsening Conditions
Assam and Arunachal Pradesh are grappling with
devastating floods, affecting over 600,000 people across 19 districts. Heavy
rainfall has caused rivers like the Brahmaputra and Barak to surpass danger
levels, prompting state administrations to prepare for worsening conditions in
the coming days.
In Assam, 6.4 lakh individuals from 1,275 villages are
impacted, with 8,142 seeking refuge in 72 relief camps, primarily in districts
like Karimganj, Tinsukia, Lakhimpur, and Dibrugarh. Tragically, 35 lives have
been lost to flood-related incidents this year alone. Meanwhile, in Kaziranga
National Park, flooding has submerged 95 out of 233 forest check-posts,
prompting wildlife to migrate to higher ground in Karbi Anglong.
Arunachal Pradesh faces a similar crisis, with floods
and landslides wreaking havoc in various regions. Itanagar has closed schools
until July 6, and Assam Rifles have been deployed to rescue around 500 people
stranded in Namsai and Changlang districts.
The situation remains critical as the IMD forecasts
further heavy rainfall across the region over the next four days.
