AI Needs Global Pact, Will Transform Indian Services, says Salesforce CEO!
Salesforce India's CEO Emphasizes AI's Potential to Transform
Public Services and Calls for Global Cooperation
Arundhati Bhattacharya, CEO and Chairperson of Salesforce India and former
Chairperson of the State Bank of India, asserts that artificial intelligence
(AI) is poised to revolutionize various sectors, including healthcare,
diagnostics, education, and skills development. Highlighting the cross-border
nature of AI, Bhattacharya advocates for a "Global Compact" to ensure
its benefits are shared universally and to mitigate potential misuse.
In an interview with PTI, Bhattacharya emphasized the transformative
potential of AI in enhancing public service delivery in India. She noted that
AI could significantly improve efficiency and reduce costs, thereby making
public services more accessible and effective.
Bhattacharya underscored the importance of global collaboration in
regulating AI, given its ability to transcend national borders. She expressed
confidence in AI's potential to benefit society but cautioned against its
misuse, advocating for careful and responsible deployment. "AI is like any
other tool; it can be used for good or bad purposes. We need to be cautious
about how we use it," she said.
Drawing parallels with global climate issues, Bhattacharya stressed the need
for an international consensus on AI governance. "AI will impact people
globally and is not confined by borders. A Global Compact is essential to
ensure it is used responsibly and for the greater good," she stated.
Bhattacharya described AI as a "gamechanger" for India,
highlighting its potential to address the country's unique challenges.
"India has ample manpower but needs technology to help individuals reach
their full potential. AI can provide the first layer of insights and ensure
fair distribution of resources," she explained.
The discussion around AI is not limited to its benefits. Policymakers
worldwide are also focusing on the potential risks and the need for a
responsible, human-centric governance framework for AI. Bhattacharya's call for
a Global Compact on AI reflects the growing recognition of the importance of
international cooperation in harnessing AI's potential while safeguarding
against its risks.
