LPG Prices to Rise by ₹50 Per Cylinder from April 8, 2025; Government Cites Periodic Price Review!
In a move that will directly impact millions of households across the
country, the Government of India has announced a ₹50 increase in the price of
Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinders, effective from Tuesday, April 8, 2025.
The announcement was made by Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas,
Hardeep Singh Puri, during a press conference held in New Delhi on Monday.
As per the revised pricing, PMUY beneficiaries—those availing LPG under the
Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY)—will now pay ₹550 per cylinder, up from
the previous rate of ₹500. For non-PMUY consumers, the cost of a domestic 14.2
kg LPG cylinder will increase from ₹803 to ₹853.
Why the Price Hike?
Minister Puri explained that the price revision is part of the government’s
periodic review mechanism that considers international fuel prices,
transportation costs, and currency fluctuations. He also indicated that while
the price hike is necessary at this juncture, the government will continue to
monitor the situation closely and may adjust prices in the future based on
global crude trends and domestic economic factors.
"The price per LPG cylinder will rise by ₹50 for both PMUY and non-PMUY
users. This is part of a routine pricing review and we will evaluate its impact
in the coming weeks," said Minister Puri.
Impact on Consumers
The hike is expected to strain household budgets, especially in middle and
lower-income groups already dealing with inflation and rising living costs. For
PMUY beneficiaries, many of whom are women from Below-Poverty-Line (BPL) households
in rural India, the increase could present a challenge to regular refilling
patterns. However, the government has reiterated its commitment to providing
clean and accessible cooking fuel to the economically weaker sections of
society.
About PMUY
Launched in 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a flagship welfare
initiative aimed at empowering women and promoting clean energy. The scheme
offers subsidized LPG connections to women in BPL families, helping to reduce
dependency on traditional, polluting cooking fuels like firewood and kerosene.
Since its inception, the scheme has benefited over 9 crore households and
played a vital role in improving health conditions, reducing indoor air
pollution, and supporting the government's goals of sustainable development.
Government Response and Future Outlook
The Petroleum Ministry has assured that the situation is being closely
monitored and that further subsidies or relief measures may be considered if
required. While the increase is moderate, the long-term implications on
consumption behavior and rural LPG usage are areas of concern being evaluated.
This price hike follows a series of fuel price adjustments witnessed over
the past few months, driven by fluctuating global crude oil prices and geopolitical
uncertainties.
As India continues to balance affordability, clean energy goals, and
economic stability, the LPG price revision reflects the complexities of
managing essential commodities in a volatile global energy market.
