Centre Hikes Excise Duty on Petrol and Diesel by ₹2 Per Litre; Retail Prices Unchanged

Despite the hike, fuel prices at the pump to remain steady, assures Petroleum Ministry.

The Central government has announced a ₹2 per litre hike in excise duty on both petrol and diesel, effective April 8, 2025. According to the Department of Revenue, the excise duty on petrol will now stand at ₹13 per litre, while diesel will attract a duty of ₹10 per litre.

Despite the increase in excise duty, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has assured consumers that the retail prices of fuel will not be affected. In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the ministry said, "PSU Oil Marketing Companies have informed that there will be no increase in retail prices of Petrol and Diesel, subsequent to the increase affected in Excise Duty Rates today."

The revision in duty has been implemented by the Centre citing public interest, under the provisions of Section 5A of the Central Excise Act, 1944, and Section 147 of the Finance Act, 2002.
