A massive avalanche struck Gandhi Sarovar, located
four kilometers above Kedarnath Dham, early Sunday morning. Despite the
dramatic scene captured by devotees near the Chorabari glacier, there was no
loss of life or property. The incident occurred amid a significant influx of
pilgrims participating in the Char Dham Yatra.
Rudraprayag District Disaster Management Officer
Nandan Singh Rajwar confirmed the safety of the entire area, including the
Kedarnath valley. Witnesses described the avalanche as a huge cloud of snow
sliding down the mountain and stopping in a deep ravine.
This marks another in a series of avalanches in the
Chorabari glacier area, with previous incidents reported in June 2023 and
September and October 2022. Scientists from the Indian Institute of Remote
Sensing and the Wadia Institute have been conducting surveys to monitor the
situation.
