Kerala Braces for Heavy Rains and Thunderstorms: IMD Issues Red Alert!

Heavy rains and thunderstorms predicted as IMD issues a red alert for multiple districts in Kerala!

Kochi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, and Alappuzha districts in Kerala until May 21 due to heavy pre-monsoon rains. Several areas, including Thiruvananthapuram, experienced significant rainfall. An orange alert is in effect for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, and Malappuram until May 22, predicting isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

The IMD's bulletin highlights strong westerly/southwesterly winds from May 19-23, causing widespread rain, thunderstorms, and rough sea conditions. Residents are advised to stay cautious, especially in coastal and hilly regions prone to mudslides and landslides.

Significant waterlogging was reported in Thiruvananthapuram, with local residents blaming inadequate maintenance of stormwater drains. In Pathanamthitta, heavy rains caused a wall collapse at a church cemetery, damaging graves. The State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) has halted tourist movement to coastal and hilly areas and advised fishermen against venturing into the sea. Additionally, the Idukki District Collector has banned night travel in hilly areas until the alerts are withdrawn.
