In a tragic incident raising concerns about civic infrastructure in the national capital, one person died and five were injured on Friday morning when a portion of the roof at Delhi airport's Terminal 1 collapsed onto cars, including taxis, amid a heavy downpour. The collapse caused chaos for both road and air traffic.
The capital recorded 153.7 mm of rainfall starting around 3 AM, leading to widespread waterlogging that disrupted travel plans for many. Terminal 1 of the Indira Gandhi International Airport was closed until 2 PM following the roof collapse, affecting numerous fliers. According to the India Meteorological Department, very heavy rain is defined as rainfall between 124.5 and 244.4 mm in a day.
An official reported that one person succumbed to
injuries during treatment, while five others are receiving medical care. One
person was rescued from a car struck by an iron beam. The collapse of both the
roof sheet and support beams caused significant damage to cars in the
terminal's pick-up and drop area.
