V.K. Pandian Bows Out: Aide of Naveen Patnaik Exits Politics After Election Setback!
Pandian's
Apology and Reflection on BJD's Defeat Amid BJP's 'Odia Pride' Campaign!
V.K. Pandian, once a formidable figure in the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) government and close aide to outgoing Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, announced his retirement from active politics on Sunday. This decision comes in the wake of the BJD's significant losses in both the Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections. Following the defeat, Pandian was held accountable for the party's poor performance, largely due to the Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) focused campaign on 'Odia asmita (pride).' The BJP highlighted the influence of the Tamil Nadu-born former IAS officer and implied that he was set to succeed Patnaik. In response, Pandian had pledged to retire from politics if the BJD did not secure victory.
"My intent in joining politics was solely to assist Naveen Babu. I am deeply sorry if my involvement has contributed to the BJD's loss," Pandian stated on social media. He emphasized that he never sought power but aimed to support his mentor.
During the campaign, Pandian and Patnaik took center stage, overshadowing other BJD leaders. This created a perception among voters that Pandian was on the brink of taking over from Patnaik, which, coupled with strong anti-incumbency sentiments and the BJP's emphasis on Odia pride, led to the BJD's downfall. The BJP won a majority in the 147-member Odisha Assembly with 78 seats, while the BJD managed to secure 51 seats. In the Lok Sabha elections, the BJP claimed 20 out of 21 seats.
Reflecting on the campaign and its outcome, Pandian expressed regret for not countering political narratives effectively. "I apologize to the Biju pariwar (family) and all its members. Odisha and my guru, Naveen Babu, will always hold a special place in my heart," he added. Pandian's departure marks a significant shift in Odisha's political landscape, ending his controversial yet influential role in the BJD.
