Rajasthan Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena Resigns After Lok Sabha Defeat
Upholds Promise to Quit Following BJP's
Loss in Dausa Seat
A month after the Lok Sabha election defeat, Rajasthan
Cabinet Minister Kirodi Lal Meena resigned late Wednesday, fulfilling his
promise to step down if BJP lost the Dausa seat. In the election, Congress’s
Murari Lal Meena defeated BJP’s Kanhaiya Lal Meena by over 2.3 lakh votes.
Kirodi Lal Meena confirmed his resignation to a news
channel, stating he had no moral right to attend Chief Minister Bhajan Lal’s
Cabinet meeting. Despite submitting his resignation papers days earlier, they
have not been accepted yet. Senior to the CM and Deputy CMs in age and party
tenure, Meena holds four departments in the Bhajan Lal Sharma government.
Denying dissatisfaction with the party, Meena cited
his public commitment to resign if BJP lost Dausa. He reiterated that he
couldn't continue enjoying government perks after failing to secure the seat.
Meena had pledged his resignation during the campaign and reiterated his stand
before the election results.
Despite efforts on multiple seats, BJP also lost in
Tonk, Sawai Madhopur, Karauli-Dholpur, and Bharatpur in eastern Rajasthan.
Meena's resignation announcement went viral, and he posted a quote from
Ramcharitmanas on Facebook: “Raghukul reeti sada chali aai, pran jaai par
bachan na jaai”.
