West More Concerned Than China About India-Russia Relations, Says Chinese Daily
India Navigates Complex Diplomatic Terrain
Amid Western Disapproval
The West, not China, is more troubled by India’s
strengthening ties with Russia, according to an article in the Global Times, a
state-backed English tabloid from Beijing. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi
embarks on a closely watched visit to Russia, the Modi government remains
optimistic that Moscow will maintain its strategic relationship with India
despite growing China-Russia proximity. This concern comes against the backdrop
of the ongoing border standoff between India and China and the crucial Russian
defense supplies to India.
The article highlights Western dissatisfaction with
India's refusal to condemn Russia over the Ukraine conflict and join sanctions,
unlike the significant criticism China has faced. According to Long Xingchun, a
professor from Sichuan International Studies University, Western nations have
attempted to align India against China, but India has not reciprocated these
diplomatic overtures, leading to growing Western disappointment.
Modi's choice of Russia as his first foreign visit
destination in his third term underscores India's intent to bolster its ties
with Russia and enhance its negotiating leverage with Western nations, analysts
suggest.
